Hazel and her family crossing an open pan on the way to Amboseli’s Longinye swamp. Hazel is one of Amboseli’s grand old matriarchs. With her enormous tusks she makes an impressive sight. The matriarchs are the repositories of knowledge for the whole population. These individuals hold the key to the well being and survival of their extended families. Over time this knowledge is passed on to other family members and so when a matriarch dies the responsibility is taken on by the next oldest female.
