Male elephants usually go independent from the age of 12. Having grown up in the safety and security of the family, the males are gradually rejected by the oldest females. Over time the young males become more and more peripheral until finally they leave for good. Once they have left they are on their own and have to fend for themselves. Without the knowledge and guidance of the matriarch some young males are unable to survive this difficult transition. They form loose associations with other bulls called bull groups. Here an adolescent male is climbing on the back of another adolescent bull. It is situations such as this that led to the myth that elephants only mated in water. The truth is that elephants never mate in water.
