When bulls are in musth the temporal glands behind their eyes swell and exude a trickle of pungent smelling liquid. It is an advertisement to other bulls that they are prepared to fight for access to females. Bull elephants in musth are unpredictable and one has to be careful when approaching them. The elephants of Kenya’s Amboseli National Park in Kenya are remarkably tolerant and but this one allowed me to get very close before raising his trunk to check my scent. However not all elephants in musth are so approachable. One such bull, aptly named “Bad Bull”, terrified even the most hardened of the elephant researchers. I once had a full on charge from Bad Bull. I was so surprised I simply froze and was unable to start the Land-Rover to get away in time. Fortunately he stopped in cloud of dust a few feet from me. He kicked the ground, trumpeted loudly and then turned and moved away. At that time he was Amboseli’s biggest bull and it was terrifying to be charged by such a huge animal. Bad Bull died recently of old age.
