During the dry season large aggregations of elephants make their way to the life giving swamps in the centre of Amboseli National Park. The swamps are fed by run off from nearby Kilimanjaro, which at nearly 6,000 metres dominates the landscape. Without this run off Amboseli would be a dry dusty wasteland dependent on seasonal and unpredictable rains. The swamps act like a magnet and animals come from miles around. Here a single large family is almost at the edge of the swamp. You can sense the anticipation in the posture of each and every elephant.
