As the elephants emerge from the Acacia tortilis woodlands on their way to the central swamps they frequently pause to dig for roots and tubers in the ground. They spend more time doing this as the dry season progresses and food becomes more difficult to find. This particular morning was beautifully clear and it is easy to make out the steep-sided valleys near the summit Kilimanjaro despite it being over 25 miles away.
