Elephants are extremely “emotional” animals. The calves play often but sometimes even the adults play. This behaviour can be elicted in a number of ways. Sometimes it is after the elephants have had a fright. For instance in Amboseli National Park the elephants are still sometimes speared and so they are terrified of the Maasai people. If they catch their wind they will run. But after some time when they start to feel safe once more this frightened running can turn into hysterical play. Here an adult female is running and trumpeting in playful exuberance.
