Echo is in her late 50’s and is the matriarch of a family of elephants known by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project researchers as the EB family. She is a wise and gentle elephant who has successfully led her family through good times and bad for over 30 years. I have documented the lives of this family for 15 years and so know them all as individuals and I am sure Echo recognizes me by my voice and smell. Here I am lying flat on the ground as she leads her family across one of Amboseli’s flat alkaline pans. She knows I am there but chooses to ignore my antics.
